Many people unfamiliar with the word frequently think that it's an island that's to the west of Montreal however, the West Island is home to everything from the Lachine city. Lachine west. Amanda Brugel's birthplace is frequently mentioned, but her brief visit to the West Island was not. Brugel grew up in Courtice close to Oshawa Ontario. She had a dream to become a dancer, however a rapid growth rate resulted in her outgrowing the dancers she was with. In an interview with the Toronto Star, she confessed that "In heels, I'm 6 feet and 1 inch." When I surpassed the size of my male companion and stopped dancing, I quit. Many dancers make the transition into acting. As for the Brugel family, it was their drama instructor who pushed her in that direction. A teacher suggested that she take part in an audition for the annual school production. She auditioned and was eventually cast as the role of the main character in Anne of Green Gables. It was the Fine Arts Talent Scholarship led her to York University, where she completed her studies in Theatre and graduated with the Bachelors in Fine Arts in the year 2000. In the 20+ years since, Brugel has landed roles in over 60 shows on small and big screens. She attracted the most media attention after she was offered the part as Rita on the award-winning series The Handmaid's Tale (pictured below). Brugel was the only Canadian actor in the season 1 of the series, and only seen occasionally.
